Can I use lawn trimmings as mulch?

I've been putting my lawn clippings onto the vegetable garden as mulch. Is this a good idea?

It’s often better to compost any green waste obtained from the rest of your yard. Putting grass clippings straight on your vegetable patch can often lead to negative effects, as the green waste can create water-repellent sheet which prevents your vegetables from getting adequate water.

There’s also a chance that other seeds, weeds or spores are contained within the clippings which means they have the potential to infest your beautiful garden. It is better to use Lucerne mulch which has a high nitrogen content which veges love and add some garden compost.
