Lavender – the smell of memories

← Part of News

Lavender is an amazing plant. During medieval times it was thought to ward off evil spirits, and has long been used for its aromatic and healing properties. Used as a relaxant and a sensory stimulant, it is also used to treat exhaustion, headaches and arthritis.

The secret to growing lavender successfully is well-drained soil. Dig a hole in the part of the garden where you would like to plant the lavender and fill it with water. If it takes any longer than one hour for the water to drain away, your lavender may struggle to survive without improving the drainage properties of the soil.

Pohlmans has several varieties of lavender available at the moment including the Sensations series which are particularly attractive to bees and butterflies and are very versatile, growing just as well in pots and containers as in the garden. The Tuscany has extra large flowers and is extremely heat and humidity tolerant, just perfect coming into Summer. The new Tuscany Grand Purple Lavender is proving very popular with its soft mauve tips and deep purple flower heads and will happily flower right through the warmer months – the bees love it too!
